Land-Use Research

10/97-9/99 Dissertation Research: "The Dynamics of Terra Preta: An Integrated Study of

Human-Environmental Interaction in a Nutrient-Poor Amazonian Ecosystem." Carried out comprehensive ethnographic, theoretical and applied research to: a) understand the factors (ecological, economic, technological, cultural) structuring land-use options in nutrient-poor (oligotrophic) blackwater ecosystems, b) develop improved conceptual models of human ecosystems, and c) better understand the coupling of ecosystem properties with land-use strategies.

5/98-5/99 Ethnographic and geomorphological research in Brazil. Mapped and performed

pedological characterizations of archaeological soils and analyzed the correlation between areas of preferred Amerindian settlement and resource distributions.

8/96 Ethnographic research in Brazil. Characterized subsistence and market uses of

anthropogenic Black Earth sites of the Negro River and Sateré-Maué Indigenous Reserve as precursor to dissertation research.

6/95-7/95 Research in Ecuador. Researched cultural and ecological dimensions of resource management in the buffer zone of the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve.

8/94 Ethnographic research in northwestern Ecuador. Characterized livelihood

strategies of mestizo colonists, hacienda owners and itinerant laborers, with a qualitative assessment of associated environmental impacts.

11/93-12/93 Policy Analyst, Regional Workshop on Sustainable Agriculture and Regional

Workshop on the Environment and Productivity. Workshops generated policy recommendations for Central America. INCAE, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Participatory Research

6/00 to 9/00 Strategic Planning. Initiated a participatory strategic planning exercise among Law School faculty at UGA to target reforms for the international law center.

6/95 to 7/95 Ethnobotanical Research. Carried out participatory research to document

medicinal plants and associated ethnobotanical knowledge, as solicited by

UNORCAC (indigenous federation of the Cantón de Cotacachi, Ecuador).

10/91-6/94 Community Development and Agricultural Extension. Worked with poor farmers to generate, validate and disseminate agricultural technologies and to modify community-based planning methodologies; catalyzed reforms in work methodologies to more participatory approaches. Departamento de Desarrollo Rural, Escuela Agrícola Panamericana (EAP), Honduras.

10/93 International Course on Regenerative Agriculture. Worked with development

practitioners from around the world to document participatory planning methodologies, and to evaluate these in the field and classroom.

Program Development

Present Reserva Indígena do Alto Rio Negro, Brazil. Co-developing interdisciplinary $0.5M proposal for economic and ecological research on alternative land-use scenarios for a nutrient-poor (oligotrophic) indigenous territory in the Amazon.

Sciences. Currently writing, "Cooperation in Legal Scholarship: A Strategy to

Strengthen U.S. –Russian Relations," a proposal for bilateral cooperation.

Present Dean Rusk Center and International Partners. Developing several faculty-initiated projects to expand faculty research into the international realm.
