Excursions to Brazil

March - April 1996

Field work and sample collection of Terra Preta soils in Manaus and its surroundings as well as in Santarém and its surroundings for the Terra Preta 1 project. Data were evaluated for PhD thesis of the author. 

September - October 2001

Congress of the Society of Brazilian Archaeologists, Session on Terra Preta soils. Afterwards field work within the SHIFT ENV-45 project in Manaus.

July 2002

Participation of the International Terra Preta workshop in Manaus. Afterwards excursion with BBC people to Terra Preta sites along the Rio Negro by boat. Visiting Terra Preta sites near Santarém and along the Tapajos river.

September - October 2002

Field work within the SHIFT ENV-45 project in Manaus.

Nobember 2002

Coordination workshop for the Mata Atlantica conservation project, funded by BMBF for the German project partners and CNPq for the Brazilian counterparts.

June - July 2003

Field work within the joint Mata Atlantica conservation project in the fragmented landscape near Caucaia do Alto, SP.

September - October 2003

Field work within the joint Mata Atlantica conservation project in the fragmented landscape near Caucaia do. Installing a field experiment for the quantification of soil organic matter turnover rates.

December 2003

Coordination of SHIFT ENV-45, Mata Atlantica, and Terra Preta field research at the USP Sao Paulo. Inspection of the field experiment for assessing turnover rates of soil organic matter.

Small remnant of primary or old secondary forest in the Federal Forest Reserve near Caucaia, about 50 km west of Sao Paulo.

 

 

 

Obvious anthropogenic pressure on forests in heavily inhabited areas near Sao Paulo. In the background more or less young forest can be seen which is typical for fragments of secondary forest.
